In a welcome step for Jersey homeowners looking to save energy and cut bills, local solar specialists SunWorks have teamed up with Francisco EPC Surveys to offer integrated EPC retrofit services. This collaboration brings together SunWorks’ long-standing experience in roofing and solar installations with Francisco EPC Surveys’ expertise in Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) assessments and energy advice. The aim is to provide practical guidance and solutions that help properties use less energy overall, making homes more comfortable and cost-effective year-round.

SunWorks has completed hundreds of solar installations across the island since starting in 2013, while Francisco EPC Surveys, run by qualified domestic energy assessor Bruno Francisco, delivers detailed audits to identify where energy is wasted. Together, they support a balanced approach to home improvements that puts conservation first.

What Are Energy Performance Certificates?

An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rates a property’s energy efficiency on a scale, much like appliance labels, and suggests practical upgrades to improve it. In Jersey, EPCs are not yet mandatory for all sales or rentals, though the government has been working towards this as part of broader energy policies. An EPC provides a clear picture of how well a home retains heat, uses energy for heating and lighting, and where savings could be made.

Approved assessors carry out surveys that examine insulation levels, windows, doors, heating systems, and more. The resulting certificate and recommendations help owners prioritise changes that deliver real reductions in energy use. Grants are available to cover part of the cost of these audits, making it easier to get started.

The Fabric First Principle: Tackling the Building Envelope Before Anything Else

The Fabric First approach focuses on improving the building’s outer shell – walls, roof, floors, windows, and doors – to reduce heat loss before considering new heating systems or renewables. This passive strategy cuts overall energy demand, leading to lower bills and better comfort without relying heavily on active heating or cooling.

In Jersey’s mild climate, where heating is needed for much of the year but extremes are rare, these measures can reduce heating requirements substantially. Experts recommend addressing the fabric before switching fuels, as a well-insulated home needs far less energy to stay warm. This avoids situations where new systems work harder than necessary, and it ensures any later upgrades perform at their best.

Many properties, especially older ones, lose heat through poor insulation or draughts. Starting here creates a strong foundation for efficiency.

Why Conservation Matters Alongside Fuel Switching

Jersey’s plans to reduce emissions include encouraging a switch from fossil fuel heating and transport to lower-carbon options, such as heat pumps and electric vehicles. These changes help tackle major emission sources, but conservation – reducing the total amount of energy needed – is equally important.

Fuel switching is easier to track and often highlighted in progress reports, yet simple conservation steps like better insulation can deliver significant savings with quicker paybacks. Without addressing waste first, some benefits of new systems may be reduced. A combined approach, starting with conservation, maximises savings and makes the most of available support.

Current Government Incentives for Energy Improvements

Jersey offers targeted funding to encourage energy efficiency:

  • The Low Carbon Heating Incentive provides up to £9,000 in match funding towards installing air source heat pumps (or up to £4,000 for other approved low-carbon technologies). Low-income households may qualify for up to £15,000 without matching. The scheme continues into 2026 and supports transitions from oil or gas boilers.
  • Home Energy Audit grants cover up to £150 for domestic EPC assessments (£100 for 1-2 bedroom properties, £150 for larger ones), helping owners understand their home’s performance.

These incentives are administered through gov.je, with first-come, first-served allocation in some cases. Checking the latest details on the government website is recommended, as schemes evolve.

Retrofitting for Better Thermal Performance

Upgrading the building envelope brings noticeable improvements. Wall insulation (cavity wall or internal/external) can cut heat loss significantly. Upgraded windows and doors with double or triple glazing reduce draughts and improve comfort. Roof insulation, such as multilayer reflective products like Actis Hybris, adds effective thermal barriers while allowing good ventilation.

Sealing gaps around pipes, vents, and frames prevents unwanted air movement. These changes often transform draughty homes into warmer, quieter spaces that require much less heating.

Homes That Need Minimal Heating

Well-insulated, airtight homes with controlled ventilation can maintain comfortable temperatures with very little active heating. In Jersey’s temperate conditions, such properties rely on body heat, appliances, and passive solar gain, reducing energy use dramatically and keeping bills low.

Smart Controls for Ongoing Efficiency

Smart thermostats, heating controls, and energy monitors help optimise usage by adjusting to occupancy patterns and providing real-time feedback. These tools ensure energy is used only when needed, complementing physical upgrades for sustained savings.

The Role of Solar PV

Solar photovoltaic systems generate clean electricity on-site, offsetting grid imports and lowering bills. In a well-insulated home, solar covers a larger share of needs, enhancing self-sufficiency. Paired with efficient roofs and envelope upgrades, solar becomes even more effective.

This partnership highlights a practical way forward for Jersey: assess first with an EPC, improve the fabric, then add renewables where suitable. Homeowners interested in an audit, retrofit advice, or solar options can explore further through local providers and gov.je resources. Taking steps now brings lasting comfort, lower costs, and alignment with the island’s efficiency goals.

In a recent episode of the What If podcast by Channel 103, SunWorks Managing Director Mark Brandon sat down with Ben Jordan to explore one big question: What if… Islanders could reshape Jersey’s energy future?

From rooftop solar to energy independence, the conversation highlights how the Island could move towards a more self-reliant, low-carbon future and the role everyday homeowners can play.

Mark shared the journey behind SunWorks, which began in 2013 with a simple idea: bring a renewable energy service to Jersey that didn’t yet exist.

Today, the company has grown into one of the Island’s leading energy specialists, with hundreds of installations and a broader focus beyond solar alone including roofing & property insulation.

Why more Islanders are going solar

A key theme in the discussion was the shift in how people think about energy, from passive consumers to active participants.

“One of the main reasons people go to go solar is they want to be self-reliant.” Mark explains that solar doesn’t just reduce bills, it changes behaviour. Homeowners become “prosumers,” generating and managing their own energy while contributing back to the grid. “It will turn you into what’s called a prosumer, you’re both a producer and a consumer of energy.”

With typical payback periods now under 10 years in Jersey, solar is increasingly seen as a practical, long-term investment.

Busting common solar myths

The podcast also tackled some of the most common misconceptions about solar in Jersey, from doubts about sunlight levels to confusion around selling energy back to the grid.

“People often think that Jersey electricity won’t accept your power, but they certainly will.” Mark emphasised that modern systems are highly predictable, with accurate forecasts of energy generation and savings available before installation.

Rooftop vs large-scale energy

While large-scale solar farms and offshore wind projects are part of Jersey’s future, Mark was clear that rooftop solar has a vital role to play, “The two can work in tandem. It’s not either or.”

From individual homes to commercial buildings, distributed energy generation could significantly strengthen the Island’s resilience.

A bigger question: energy sovereignty

Looking ahead, the conversation turned to a broader issue, how much control Jersey should have over its own energy.

Despite currently importing the vast majority of electricity from France, Mark believes the next phase should focus on local generation and long-term independence. “The theme of the next 20 years or so, should be about energy sovereignty.”

The home of the future

So, what does a low-carbon Jersey home look like? Mark believes, it’s an integrated system; solar panels, battery storage, electric vehicles and smart controls, all working together.

“The energy customers of the future are partly self-reliant, up to 50% of their power comes from their own resources.”

This episode offers a thought-provoking look at Jersey’s energy landscape, from policy and infrastructure to the everyday choices that could shape the Island’s future.

At SunWorks, we believe that building a more sustainable future starts with education. That’s why we were delighted to partner with local schools to deliver an engaging learning experience focused on solar energy and environmental responsibility.

A little while ago, students at St Saviour Primary School and St Lawrence Primary School took part in a special programme designed to introduce them to the power of renewable energy. Through interactive lessons, students explored how solar energy works, why it matters, and how small changes can have a big impact on the environment.

To bring their new knowledge to life, students were invited to take part in a creative competition: designing their very own “dream home” featuring solar and sustainable elements. The results were nothing short of inspiring. From rooftop solar panels and energy-efficient layouts to imaginative eco-friendly features, the students showcased not only their creativity but a genuine understanding of sustainability.

After much deliberation, one overall winner and three runners-up were selected across the participating schools. Each of these talented students will receive a voucher for a local toy store as a reward for their efforts and innovation.

More importantly, every student who took part walked away with something even more valuable: a deeper awareness of how renewable energy can shape a better future.

This initiative is part of SunWorks’ ongoing commitment to education in the community. By working with schools, we hope to inspire young minds, spark curiosity, and empower the next generation to think sustainably.

We’re incredibly proud of all the students who participated and grateful to the teachers and schools who welcomed us so warmly.

SunWorks has announced the return of its popular Solar Giveaway for 2026, offering one local social enterprise or community project the opportunity to receive a fully funded solar PV installation, thanks to sponsorship from Benest Estates.

Launching in May, the initiative is designed to help those providing vital services in the community to reduce their energy costs while supporting Jersey’s transition to a more sustainable future. The campaign has become a highlight in the local calendar, giving back to the community by making renewable energy more accessible to those who need it most. Benest Estates is a local familyrun agency based in St. Brelade, known for its friendly, customerfocused service and commitment to community engagement.

Previous winners of the initiative include The Sustainable Cooperative Jersey (SCOOP) and Oxygen Therapy Jersey. Since the installation, SCOOP has reduced its electricity costs by £1,300, with 99% of its solar generation being used directly onsite. As energy prices rise, these savings will only increase, making the initiative a gift that keeps giving, providing tens of thousands of pounds in savings over the decades ahead

Mark Brandon, Managing Director of SunWorks, said, “We’re proud to bring back the Solar Giveaway for another year and to continue supporting islanders in a meaningful, practical way. We’re especially grateful to Benest Estates for their generous support this year; their contribution has made it possible for us to deliver an even greater impact, and it’s fantastic to be working with a partner that shares our commitment to the Jersey community and a more sustainable future.”

André Benest, Managing Director of Benest Estates, said, “Benest Estates is proud to sponsor the SunWorks Solar Giveaway for 2026. Supporting initiatives that give back to our island community is incredibly important to us, and this donation is a fantastic opportunity to help a local charity or community project make a meaningful difference. We’re delighted to be part of something that encourages positive change and supports the people and organisations who work so hard for Jersey.”

Applications for the Solar Giveaway will open in May and run through to June, with a shortlist of finalists announced in July. The public will then be invited to vote for the winning entry, before the successful applicant is revealed on 31 August. Installation of the solar system will take place in September.

With energy prices remaining a key concern for many households, initiatives like the Solar Giveaway play an important role in demonstrating the long-term benefits of renewable energy. SunWorks continues to champion renewable energy solutions across Jersey, helping homes and businesses adopt new ways of using energy, with over 600 installations carried out in Jersey to date.

SunWorks, Jersey’s leading solar panel experts and top provider of alternative energy solutions, is now accepting applications for its 2026 Work Placement & Bursary Scheme.

The scheme offers one motivated student a three-week paid placement this summer, working alongside a team that has installed solar on more homes across the island than any other.

In addition to supporting career development, the SunWorks team are on a mission to help shape a more sustainable energy future for Jersey. By combining expert advice, quality service and modern solar technology, they hope to help the island make better use of its natural resources and set an example for other offshore communities. But their focus isn’t just on clean energy. Through their Solar Giveaway initiative, SunWorks also supports the local community by donating a solar installation to a charity or social enterprise, helping them generate their own power, cut day-to-day costs and free up more funds for the important work they do.

Since 2013 SunWorks has completed over 600 local solar installations, building a reliable reputation in solar, roofing, and energy solutions for homes and businesses. The company remains focused on steady growth and on supporting new talent in the field.

The successful bursary applicant will take part in a real-world interview process and then choose areas to focus on, such as supporting site surveys, system design, and helping with rooftop installations. It is practical work in a growing sector that is helping Jersey move towards cleaner energy.

They will work directly with experienced teams across surveying, design, installation and related tasks, gaining hands-on skills that go beyond classroom learning. The selected student receives a £1,500 bursary, with potential for further paid work afterwards.

Mark Brandon, Managing Director at SunWorks, said: “The bursary helps students, but the real draw is the practical, real-world work experience. We want to support young people interested in renewables or construction. So much of university focuses on theory, but businesses are the ones driving energy change and building employable skills. Education and workplaces often feel disconnected, so we are trying to help close that gap – and we would encourage other local firms to do the same.”

The scheme is aimed at students interested in the environment who are considering degrees or careers in energy, construction, engineering, project management, or computer-aided design. Dominic Neal, who took part in 2024 while studying Mechanical Engineering, said:

“In 2024 I was selected for the three-week placement with SunWorks. I learn best hands-on, so I enjoyed helping with rooftop solar installations. The team was welcoming and let me get involved in system design, fault diagnosis through monitoring platforms, and more practical roof work. I was doing real tasks from day one. Now working full-time in Jersey, I recommend it to anyone thinking about construction, renewables or related areas – it gives solid industry insight you cannot get from lectures alone.”

Applications close at the end of March 2026. Interviews begin in April Easter Holidays, with the placement taking place over summer.

To apply for the bursary scheme, email your CV and a short note explaining why the opportunity interests you to info@sunworks.je.
