Better Business Grant Supports Major SunWorks Warehouse Upgrade in St Helier
SunWorks (C.I.) Ltd has officially opened its newly remodelled warehouse facility in St Helier following a major investment supported by the Jersey Business Better Business Grant.
The project, which received funding covering 50% of the total cost through the Better Business Grant scheme, has transformed the company’s warehouse and logistics operation, delivering significant productivity, efficiency and health and safety improvements.
Planning for the upgrade began in 2023 as SunWorks sought to future-proof its warehouse operation. Although ideally located at St Helier Business Park, the former TV studio space was never designed for modern logistics and had become a growing constraint on efficiency.
Rather than relocating to larger, more expensive premises, SunWorks invested in its existing site. Following nearly three years of planning, approvals and design development, the project was delivered in collaboration with D2 Real Estate, JSL Architecture and T&G Jersey.
The Better Business Grant aligned closely with SunWorks’ objective of improving productivity per capita and played a vital role in making the project commercially viable.
Due to Jersey’s structural requirements, the existing floor was unsuitable for the planned freestanding mezzanine. Instead, the team developed an engineered Posi-Joist solution with a perimeter ring beam, maximising the existing building while maintaining full regulatory compliance. The project was delivered by Wayne Proctor of WPB Limited, working alongside a trusted network of subcontractors and the SunWorks in-house team.
The project has also been strengthened by recent additions to the SunWorks team. Warehouse & Logistics Coordinator Carlos Sousa, who joined in October 2025, played a key role in developing the warehouse layout and operational systems, while Operations Manager Daniel Le Crom, who joined in January 2026, who managed the project programme, safety and delivery.
The remodelled warehouse has introduced a range of significant improvements, including:
- A newly engineered mezzanine floor capable of handling heavy pallet loads and increased usable floor space by approximately 40%
- New roller door aligned with the existing lobby rear entrance
- Dedicated pallet handling areas and loading bays including upgraded warehouse racking
- Refurbished Toyota Electric Forklift
- Rear utility storage area with roof access that preserves valuable parking and manoeuvring space
A formal opening event was held on 5 June, welcoming business stakeholders, project partners and friends of the company to tour the new facility.
The upgraded warehouse is expected to:
- Significantly reduce material handling times
- Improve stock management
- Support greater purchasing efficiency, reduce exposure to freight costs
- Further improve health and safety standards.
- Improve workplace wellbeing with better conditions
By investing in its existing premises rather than relocating, SunWorks has secured a long-term operational base while avoiding the substantial costs associated with a larger warehouse move.
Mark Brandon, Managing Director, SunWorks said, “This is a truly transformative initiative that Government should be proud of. With all the current political discussion in Jersey, surprisingly few manifestos mention meaningful support for local businesses like ours. Creating a positive and efficient working environment for businesses doing meaningful work is the bedrock of prosperity.
The Better Business programme gave us the push to do the project properly and not cut corners. I’m extremely proud of what we’ve achieved and will always invest in our business and our people. SunWorks is now even better placed as Jersey’s leading energy and rooftop specialists. We can deliver better value, faster installations, and more reliable service to our customers. We also plan to apply for the next round of the grant in 2026 to invest in a new software stack and operations dashboard that will further turbo-charge our efficiency.”
