When the rooftop's potential power output surpasses the building's energy consumption, and there's available capital for investment, an approach often termed 'in front of the meter' is employed
In this scenario, solar generation doesn't offset electricity purchases; instead, the generated electricity is directly exported at a predetermined price over an agreed period, a structure known as a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). It's essential to consider JE's agreement provisions and the required connection works.
While there have been limited local instances of this approach thus far, it's poised to become a significant facet of Jersey's future energy generation landscape. These are applications primarily designed for electricity export.
Applications for export only
Warehouses
Buildings such are warehouses with a large roof space but lower onsite energy demand. If the owner has the capital to pay for the installation and its ongoing maintenance.
Developments
Properties or commercial developments with more complex metering arrangements such as shared rooftop apartments or even n development housing estates where it is not reasonable to divide up solar power over several units. Generated solar can be directly exported to the grid and the sale proceeds attributed to a sinking fund (freehold) / ownership company (share transfer) of the building.
