Our History of Innovation
SunWorks Founded
Mark was a qualified electrician with a burning desire to make a difference in the world and Ian comes from a finance background as an experienced Director. Together they saw an opportunity to form a family business to help change Jersey’s energy future. At this time one could probably count the number of local solar installations on 1 hand. Shrouded by myths of not being able to sell back power to ‘the JEC’ and perceived lack of efficiency it was a tough sell...
Very First Customer
Mark and Ian spent the first-year slowly establishing the company and sought expertise from outside Jersey to assist with the first installations and import the UK best practices. SunWorks obtained their very first customer in the East side of the Island and later that year installed 60 Solar panels on Co-Operative in Grouville. This first commercial job was a steep learning curve for Mark who was handling every aspect of the installation process. There were some big lessons learned which were carried forward into future projects...
First Award and First School Installation
SunWorks installed 40 Solar panels at D’Auvergne Primary School and Mark was awarded ‘Star of the Future’ at the Jersey Council Construction Awards. After exploring many European solar trade shows from Munich to Birmingham Mark found SolarEdge Technologies. This inverter technology changed his view of solar and the defined user experience he wanted to adopt. Summer of 2015 marks the first of hundreds of SolarEdge installations across Jersey in the years that followed.
Tough times for SunWorks
While growing each year times were tough for SunWorks with only 10 installation completed in this year. Solar's slow uptake in Jersey meant Mark and Ian had to start pushing for a higher volume of installations for the survival of the business. A journey to focusing on the business side and 'hitting the numbers' began. Kevin Keen was appointed was appointed as the first Non-Executive Director with sales targets set and accountability held. Mark continued to focus on quality and took his time with installations, often with the help from two UK roofing and Solar specialists.
First Employee and First Electric Vehicle
At this time SunWorks still operated out of the family home's office, keeping expenses to a minimum. The first employee was hired, greatly assisting Mark with installations and this effort saw sales double as the company broke even for the first time. In this pivotal year the first company Electric Van was acquired, a small step to a make a big change.
50 Properties Converted
With some significant experience now building, SunWoks pushed on to over 50 Island-wide installation. Comfortable with the suite of quality products, customers are able to monitor their systems remotely using the SolarEdge Monitoring App – a great way to use energy efficiently! This year also saw a boost to 10 battery systems installed alongside the new PV systems.
A Big Year of Many Firsts
This year was a huge milestone for as SunWorks hired two more staff. The first project was completed for Jersey Electricity at the La Collette Energy Division building. The company moved to Regus Offices in St. Helier and the companies capacity for installation increased significantly. This year saw another growth year with 41 installation taking the total island to over 115 SunWorks solar sites.
Utility scale Solar comes to Jersey
As the team size doubled again, SunWorks were contracted by Jersey Electricity to install the Channel Islands' Largest solar installation at Jersey Dairy, a total of 1,516 Solar panels. This saw the start of JE's lease scheme for commercial building owners and enabled SunWorks to deliver a world-class commercial solar installation in Jersey. Solar was finally finding it's way in Jersey and could not even be stopped by a global Pandemic as the company continued to grow...
Over 250 Properties Converted
In 2021, our headquarters moved to St Helier Business Park and were able to personalise the space, complete with solar panels of course. With this, 7 new team members were employed to push and hit 250 installations – a 400% increase from 2018!
Awards
Collectively, as a team, SunWorks hit over 100 installations within a year – the best year yet. Commercial included solar for clients such as Le Gallais, Acorn Enterprise, Andium Homes and JT. Mark's efforts on the businesses journey and adoption of sustainable practices was recognised locally as he was awarded ‘Sustainability Director of the Year’ at the Institute of Directors Awards. In addition, SunWorks achieved 1st and 3rd place for their entries in the #underthesameroof Trina Solar competition which resulted in global publicity and trip to the factory in Thailand.
Awards
“Energy generation built into the fabric of buildings is the future.
